oh Carrie….

I am definitely a country girl at heart… but sometimes I do wish that I lived in an old loft in New York with exposed brick and huge windows overlooking sky scrapers. I would be a young(er), hip designer that lives for the night… Carrie Bradshaw esq.?? If this was my life… I think my dining area would look something like this…
Now just picture a white exposed brick wall, reclaimed wood floors, and GIANT black framed windows looking out over the city… maybe in another life!

back at er….

Well I don't know about you, but Steve and I had a wonderful Christmas. We were spoiled rotten and spent so many wonderful days with family and friends. We are forever grateful for everything that we have and for the love and support of family. This time of year is a fantastic reminder of all of that! We are back to the grind now and I have so many plans for the new year! I'm hoping to change things up a little bit here on the blog. I have kind of been all over the map lately with my posts and in the new year I hope to pare things down a bit and concentrate mostly on design. There may be a few less posts per week, but when I do post, they will focus mostly on my designs. It is going to be a lot of work, but I am up for the task!

Now with that in mind… here is my first design for… the end of the year?! I guess I can't quite say new year yet!! I clearly have a favourite design aesthetic. For some reason lately I have really been drawn toward the retro look. I love the antiques, and the feeling of warm woods, white walls and simple, yet stand out pieces. I think it has a homey, comfortable feel with a cool and relaxed vibe to it. This design is very simple, maybe a little bit too simple for some, but in theme with a new year, how about a clean, no fuss, no muss look?! I love starting off a new year that way! she knows me so well....

My very favorite part about Christmas is watching people open gifts that I KNOW they will LOVE! My very favorite thing is seeing the look of sheer joy on their faces. On Saturday morning, my friend Steph and I met up at Stella's for breakfast and to exchange gifts! Stella's is a cafe here in Winnipeg that is ALWAYS full to the brim and they have the best fresh food with natural ingredients.
I have yet to go there for anything but breakfast, but their menu at any time of the day is to die for! I love the atmosphere of places like Stella's. It truly is a Winnipeg gem!

Anywho, back to gift giving... Steph clearly knows me very well. This is what she gave me...

Are you kidding me?? Yes I am still a bit of a child at heart (main reason Steve and I get along so well!!) and this seriously feeds to that inner child and the very creative side of me. I seriously love it!! When I asked her where she got it, I was even more excited. You see, this little shop has recently opened in our Exchange District Downtown. It is called Tiny Feast. It looks to be the cutest little paper goods store and I have heard a LOT about it but have yet to go. I am told that it lives up to all expectations and is the cutest little store. I mean they have items from the Rifle Paper Co., how can they not be totally awesome! I wanted to share this little gem with everyone as I believe that little shops like this should get the publicity they deserve. I for one cannot wait to go! Especially now since I know they carry the greatest things like a stamp carving kit!!! Thanks again Steph!! Can't wait to meet you in person Tiny Feast!!

4.5 months….

I really miss the cabin… only 4.5 months until we MIGHT be able to head back there. This has me daydreaming…

I'm often thinking about where I would ideally want to live if I won the lottery and no longer had a care in the world. If I could, I'd live at the cabin and this would be my idea of cozy cabin living…

Now how great would it be to be cuddled up by that fireplace with that blanket and a good book…ahhh if only!! 4.5 months… 4.5 months… 4.5 months…

the stockings WERE hung....

I cannot tell a lie... my posts may be few and far between these next couple of weeks. I find that even though I had all of my Christmas shopping done early this year, there still seems to be SO much left to do! Does anyone else feel this way? Between running around in the ever growing crowds and traffic, to wrapping all those gifts already bought to baking baking baking... there just seems to not be nearly enough hours in a day! And only 7 days until Christmas?!?!?! When did that happen?? Time flies when you are having fun I guess! ;)

So today as I was wrapping more gifts, I noticed that I do not have a stocking. I have no idea where my childhood stocking went, and Steve's is just hanging by our tree all by it's lonesome. In complete selfishness, I thought today I would share with you the stockings that I have been looking at for little ole me! It might be too late for this year, but next year.... I will have a stocking and I will get it from.... where else but Etsy!! Which do you like best?

I think I'm leaning towards #2... or #1.... or....

christmas goodies....

I am so full... still. Last night three of my girlfriends and I did a bake exchange. We each made three dozen of some sort of delectable goodness and then received 3 dozen of more delectable goodness. In other words, I made three dozen treats and handed each girl one dozen and they each handed me a dozen so that I had three dozen of a different kind... get it? It is truly glorious... and I will be hiding it all from Steve! This is the gloriousness that I made:

Yes Steve was mad at me for giving it away, but in return we got some pretty glorious looking goodies too! I can only tell you how I made mine however. The popcorn recipe I found on Pinterest (of course!!) and the other my mom got out of an old magazine and has stashed in her "christmas" baking folder at home. My mom is a fabulous baker and I can't wait to try out more of her treats. Here is the popcorn recipe if you are at all interested (and you should be because it's absolutely amazingly delectable, for real). As for the other... they are called Toffee Bits Triangles and you make them like this:

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

1 cup of packed light brown sugar

1tsp vanilla

1 egg yolk

2 cups of all purpose flour

1 1/4 cup of skor toffee bits

2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Heat oven to 350F. Line a 15.5x10.5" rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside. In a large bowl, beat butter with brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla until creamy. Stir in flour and 1 cup of toffee bits until well combined. Press dough evenly into prepared baking sheet. bake for 18-20 minutes or until light brown. Transfer the pan to a cooling rack. Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot cookie base. Let it stand for 5 minutes or until chocolate is softened. Spread chocolate evenly over the base, then sprinkle remaining toffee bits evenly over the chocolate. Cool until chocolate is set, about 2 to 3 hours. Cut into 3" squares. Cut each square diagonally to make 4 triangles. ENJOY!!!

ho ho ho...

I have always ALWAYS loved wrapping Christmas presents. I used to wrap all of my family's gifts (even my own.. don't worry, they were at least in a box first!!) and I would even go to my mom's friend's and help wrap their gifts too! Over the last couple of years, i've been getting a bit more creative with my gift wrapping! This year, through the wonderful world of Pinterest and blogging, I have found so many great resources and ideas! I ALWAYS print off gift tags now, and I almost always wrap with kraft paper so I love seeing simple and different ideas for additions to my kraft paper!

So far, this is what my presents are looking like...

So cute, right?! It's simple and cute, I think. I want to share with you even more fun, cute, and simple ideas for wrapping that I have found lately along

*Seriously, how cute and creative is this woman?! And with 5 kids!! Where does she find the time? Oh and she does it again here!

*How cute is this idea for the little ones?

*So many ideas here for next year!

*Can I please be rich so that I can buy all of my wrapping supplies here?! Maybe that's what I should have asked Santa for for Christmas! Is it too late??!

powder your nose...

I love bold wallpaper. I love it but I love it in smaller doses. Right now I am on a white wall kick. However, if I had a small powder room in this one bedroom condo (which would make absolutely no sense whatsoever), I would put a bold wallpaper on just one wall. Doesn't it just look fantastic?! I think that's my favorite part of little powder rooms. You can do a real statement piece like this and it's not too overwhelming. You can have fun with it! I had fun with this. I love this wallpaper… and it's stick on! No messy glue! It just keeps getting better and better! Anyway, i'll let the rest speak for itself! Enjoy!

favorite shops...

I thought I would go in a little different direction today. There are a LOT of things that I love on Etsy from many different shops. Today I want to share with you a few of my very favourite shops that I could literally buy EVERYTHING from! These are my "go to" shops, the ones that I know I'll always find something that I love from… or that I know someone else will love to get a gift from!! Some of my girlfriends might notice a few familiar items ;)

christmas tunes

We have our tree up, and decorated. We have almost every present bought and wrapped. We have watched three of my very favorite Christmas movies, A Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, and Prancer. What's left? Well, baking... and Christmas tunes!!! From now on, when I am doing ANYTHING in this house, I will have Christmas tunes on until December 25. Steve may get annoyed, but I don't really care!! Now I am sure that everyone has Christmas tunes that they love and listen to again and again and I am now going to share my list. You may think it's rather random, and it is. Boney M? YES!! For me, Christmas is not Christmas until I can hear some Boney M. I swear my mom played this album over and over and over again during the holiday season. She would throw in some Oak Ridge Boys and some Judds in there too, so they have made the list as well. My new favorite albums? Michael Buble... I know, you probably never would have thought, and I never listen to him on a regular basis, but his Christmas album is DAMN GOOD! My other more current favorite? She & Him. I freakin love Zoey Deschanel so it only makes sense that I love her Christmas album too right? Last but not least, my very favorite Christmas song ever?? Baby it's Cold Outside.... love.

one piece two looks

This bedroom was a tough one to design for me. It took me a rather long time... like three hours long. Like sitting in front of the TV watching "The Santa Clause" long. Ok I might have been a bit distracted.

Getting back to the task at hand, I started the bedroom off with the "Los Angeles" print from Rifle Paper Co. I love everything they sell, but for some reason the colors in this print really caught my eye. Oh and then... THEN I found the chair. How perfect is the chair?!!? It's a great find from Chairish. They have such a wide selection of anything and everything that you could think of that you might want to sit on. After the chair, came the credenza... I mean dresser. I knew once I saw the dresser that it would make a beautiful credenza for a dining room. Thus came look two...

Look two has quite a different feel to it. Eclectic? I obviously started off with the credenza and knew that I wanted to pair it with an eames chair. I love these chairs and really hope to own a few of my own someday! For now though, i'll just stare away and hope to win the lottery. After finding the reclaimed wood table, I knew the room needed a few pops of color and that's when I found the rug...gorgeous right? The perfect pops of color without being too splashy. That's right, I said splashy. I think a bit of my grandmother just came out in me there!

neutral bliss..

I am going to start off with a confession... I designed this room a couple of days ago, and normally I keep VERY good track of where I find different items.... and this time... I have failed. I cannot for the life of me find where I got the teddy bear or that fabric from. If you recognize either item please, please, please let me know!

Now I am going to get a little personal for one second. When Steve and I discuss having children (hopefully someday!) I always tell him that I would want to find out what the sex of the baby is so that I can decorate the room appropriately... priorities right?! Steve is adamant that it be a surprise. He knows how much I hate surprises!! Now, just incase I decide to agree with him, I thought maybe I should try my hand at designing a neutral nursery. I love the natural feel that this room has and the simple lines. I think that is the key to a neutral room, simple. As the old saying goes... keep it simple stupid!

old school....

When Steve and I were in the states, we were walking through Toys R Us and I spotted one of my favorite movies ever... BIG. This movie is from 1988... what is it doing in Toys R Us now?? Apparently they are re-releasing it?? Who knew? As soon as we got home, I rented this movie and watched it again... and it got me thinking about other older movies that I used to love!! The following I own on VHS.. and I LOVE THEM! I mean I own them on VHS for crying out loud! I believe this is the only reason that I still have a VCR. Yes I need to purchase newer versions... no I can't bring myself to do it... I know I will.... someday. Anyone else out there love these movies as much as I do... enough to own them on VHS still?!!

oh christmas tree….

On Saturday, Steve and I went to pick out our Christmas tree. I refuse to get a fake tree. I know what people will say... you are wasting trees, it's harsh to get a real tree, etc. etc. but I know that these trees were raised to be Christmas trees and I'm just helping them to fullfill their destiny! We picked out a beauty this year and it's currently sitting in our living room undecorated as we have just not had time to make it pretty yet! I'm thoroughly enjoying it just as is though.. that smell!!! However, I have had time to peruse Etsy for Christmas decor and other pretty things that I would like to own. Peruse with me, won't you?

my escape...

I love designing rooms. It's my peace. It relaxes me and lets my brain break away from the everyday and escape to a creative world where I'm the boss. I love that. This room was designed around this sofa. I LOVE Urban Outfitters for their furniture. They have amazing pieces that I would literally take any of. I'm hoping in the near future that I can win the lottery, build a gorgeous house and decorate and re-decorate every single room over and over and over again. That's my dream. It's simple… oh and of course Steve can join me in my new house too… THAT is my dream.
